About Us

Mount Barker Veterinary Hospital is a proudly independent, family-owned practice led by James and Theresa Brown, who took over the clinic in 2023. Together with their experienced team, they provide compassionate, high-quality care for small and large animals across the Great Southern region.

Dr James Brown is an internationally trained equine specialist with advanced qualifications in equine reproduction and surgery, offering a high level of expertise in equine medicine, surgery and performance care.

Dr Theresa Brown has extensive experience in both equine and small animal practice, with interests in small animal medicine, ultrasonography, surgery, and wildlife care.

They are supported by a dedicated team of veterinarians and nurses, some of whom have been with the practice for over 10-20 years. Their knowledge, continuity, and genuine care for the local community are at the heart of everything we do.

Our Facilities

Our main clinic is located at 69 Lowood Road, Mount Barker, WA. Originally purpose-built in 1978 for small animal care, the clinic has undergone a number of renovations over the years and continues to grow. Today, our hospital is equipped with modern technology including digital X-rays, ultrasound, in-house laboratory testing, endoscopy, laser therapy, advanced monitoring equipment and much more to support a wide range of medical and surgical services and provide the highest quality care for your pets.

We also operate a small branch clinic in Cranbrook on alternate Tuesday mornings, helping make veterinary care more accessible to surrounding communities.

For large animals, our veterinarians provide on-property visits across the Great Southern region using a well equipped mobile veterinary setup designed for efficient and practical farm care. Our mobile facilities include equipment such as portable ultrasound pregnancy scanners for cattle, allowing us to deliver a wide range of veterinary services directly on farm, from herd health and reproductive work to diagnostics and emergency care.

We are excited to be developing the Great Southern region’s first dedicated Equine Medical Centre. Located just minutes from our main clinic at 32330 Albany Highway, Mount Barker, this facility will allow us to offer advanced procedures, including equine surgery, right here locally.

In addition, we are also working towards establishing a separate not-for-profit wildlife hospital to better support native animals across the Great Southern region. While this facility is in development, our team already assesses and treats a wide range of wildlife cases, working closely with local carers to provide essential medical and surgical care.

Supporting Local

Supporting our local community is an important part of who we are. We proudly sponsor local sporting clubs and events through prize donations and community contributions, and Dr James Brown also serves as President of the Mt Barker Turf Club, strengthening our connection with the local equine community.

We are committed to supporting the future of the veterinary industry by offering training and work experience opportunities for students and aspiring veterinary professionals.

Our team also works closely with local rescue groups, including Alley Cat Rescue and Albany Animal Welfare, providing discounted treatment and donating time and resources wherever possible. In addition, we regularly care for injured native wildlife free of charge in partnership with wildlife carers across the region.

Most importantly, we provide 24/7 after-hours veterinary care for pets and livestock, with an on-call veterinarian always available for urgent cases.
