Equine Diagnostics

At Mt Barker Veterinary Hospital, we offer a comprehensive range of diagnostic services to identify health issues quickly and accurately, allowing us to tailor treatment plans specifically for your horse’s needs.

Our advanced diagnostic capabilities include:

  • Digital Radiography (X-rays): Quick, detailed imaging for bones, joints, and teeth to detect fractures, arthritis, dental issues, and more.
  • Ultrasound: Non-invasive imaging for soft tissues, tendons, ligaments, abdominal organs, and reproductive structures.
  • Endoscopy: Visual examination of the upper respiratory tract to diagnose issues such as airway obstructions, infections, and other respiratory conditions.
  • Gastroscopy: Direct visualisation of the stomach using a 3-metre video gastroscope—used to diagnose and monitor gastric ulcers and other gastrointestinal issues.
  • Foal IgG Testing: A crucial test to assess passive transfer of immunity in newborn foals, ideally performed 18–24 hours after birth to ensure adequate colostrum absorption.
  • SAA (Serum Amyloid A) Testing: Stable-side testing that provides rapid insight into the presence of inflammation or infection—ideal for monitoring ongoing conditions or early disease detection.
  • Laboratory Testing: blood work, fecal analysis, and joint fluid analysis to evaluate overall health, detect infections, and monitor organ function. Additionally, we utilise external laboratories for specialised tests and advanced diagnostics.

Our experienced veterinarians combine these tools with thorough clinical examinations to provide accurate diagnoses and effective treatment plans. Whether it’s routine screening or investigating a complex problem, you can trust our team to deliver the highest standard of diagnostic care.
